The hospitality community in Lagos has been left in shock following the sudden passing of esteemed hotelier, Otunba Kunle Akinyele, who tragically collapsed and died during his wife’s 60th birthday thanksgiving service on Saturday.
The unfortunate incident occurred at Christ Apostolic Church, Oke-Iyanu, Odemuyiwa District Headquarters, in the Egbeda area of Lagos State, where friends, family, and well-wishers had gathered to celebrate Deaconess Catherine Adejoke Akinyele’s milestone.
According to a post shared by digital creator Ayoade Ojeniyi on Facebook, Mr Akinyele appeared to be in distress during the service. Witnesses noted that he signalled for assistance—possibly requesting water or his inhaler—before suddenly slumping to the ground.
A video accompanying the post showed the hotelier visibly struggling, making gestures moments before the collapse.
Otunba Akinyele was a respected figure in the hospitality industry, known not only for his contributions to hotel management in Lagos but also for his warm, charismatic presence.
