There are indication that suspended deputy commissioner of police, Mr Abba Kyari, would be grilled today (Monday) by the four-man special committee set up by Inspector-General of Police Usman Alkali to review the allegations against Kyari by the United States Government.

Kyari dubbed ‘super cop’ is being probed for his alleged involvement in internet fraud perpetuated by Rahman Abba (aka Hushpuppi).

A source with the understanding of the investigation, said that the committe will meet today and review all available documents.

“It is possible that Abba Kyari would be invited for preliminary questioning if there is a need at this initial stage. It is just like taking his statement on the allegation,” the source disclosed.

The commencement of the investigation followed the Police Service Commission’s (PSC ) approval of a four-man special committee set up by the IGP.

The PSC had also approved Alkali’s recommendation for the suspension of the DCP pending the outcome of the probe. The suspension commenced on Saturday.

In a statement on Sunday, Ikechukwu Ani, spokesman of the commission, said Kyari’s suspension took effect from Saturday.

“Abba Kyari’s suspension took effect from Saturday, July 31st 2021 and would subsist pending the outcome of the investigation in respect of his indictment by the Federal Bureau of Investigation of the United States,” Ani said.

“The commission has also directed the Inspector General of Police to furnish it with information on further development on the matter for necessary further action.

“The Commission’s decision which was conveyed in a letter with reference, PSC/POL/D/153/vol/V/138 to the Inspector General of Police today, Sunday, August 1st, 2021, was signed by Hon. Justice Clara Bata Ogunbiyi, a retired Justice of the Supreme Court and Honourable Commissioner 1 in the Commission for the Commission’s Chairman, Alhaji Musiliu Smith, a retired Inspector General of Police who is currently on leave.”

Kyari, who heads the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Nigerian Police Force, has since denied any involvement in the fraud as contained in documents presented to a U.S court by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Hushpuppi alleged that he bribed Kyari to arrest one Vincent Chibuzo, a co-fraudster.

The Instagram celebrity said he gave Kyari money to arrest and jail “one of his rivals in Nigeria after a dispute over a $1.1 million scam on Qatari business people”.
