The Socio Economic Rights and Accountability Project has urged United Nations Secretary General António Guterres to invoke Article 99 of the UN Charter and bring Nigeria’s worsening insecurity before the UN Security Council.

In an open letter dated 30 May 2026, the group said Nigeria is facing escalating mass abductions, killings, attacks on civilians, and large scale displacement across states including Oyo, Benue, Borno, Plateau, Kaduna, and Zamfara.

SERAP said the scale and persistence of violence now pose a threat to international peace and security, warning that the crisis has moved beyond a domestic issue into one with regional implications.

The organisation cited repeated attacks on schools, rural communities, travellers, and displaced persons camps, including recent abductions of pupils and teachers in Oyo State and killings in parts of Katsina, Adamawa, and Borno.

It also referenced bomb attacks, armed raids, and coordinated assaults that have left dozens dead and many others abducted, saying civilians continue to bear the heaviest impact.

SERAP warned that the situation is fueling displacement, deepening humanitarian pressure, and increasing instability across the wider West African region.

The group called for Security Council briefings on Nigeria, independent investigations into attacks, stronger civilian protection, and accountability for perpetrators.

It said urgent international attention is needed to prevent further deterioration of what it described as a rapidly escalating security and humanitarian crisis.
