A surrendered Russian soldier broke down in tears as Ukrainian civilians gave him food and helped him call his mum.

The young Prisoner Of War (POW) was seen in a short video posted to social media drinking tea and eating a pasty before blowing kisses during a video call.

After he burst into tears, his mum told him: “Everything will be okay, my son.”

A male voice off camera is heard saying in Ukrainian: “These young men, it’s not their fault. They don’t know why they are here.

“They are using old maps, they are lost.”

On Twitter, the video was captioned: “Russian soldiers, surrender, Ukrainian people will feed you, just surrender.”

Ukraine’s hero President Zelensky described the invading forces as: “These are not warriors of the superpower, these are confused children who were used.”

He added: “All the captives say only one thing: they do not know why they are here. Despite the fact that there are dozens of times more than them, the morale of the enemy is constantly deteriorating.”

It comes as Russia stepped up its devastating attacks on major Ukrainian cities, with officials warning a “full-scale genocide” is under way.

Vladimir Putin unleashed a 15-hour artillery bombardment on the southern port city of Mariupol, while Kharkiv saw heavy shelling as Moscow troops continued their rampage towards capital Kyiv.

Sergiy Orlov, the deputy mayor of Mariupol, on the Black Sea, said whole districts have been levelled with the city surrounded by invading forces as artillery rains down.
