Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to provide Nigerians with clear and verifiable explanations about aspects of his past, including records relating to his educational history.
Obi made the demand in a statement posted on his official social media page on Monday, August 31, 2026, amid renewed public attention to records concerning the President being referenced in legal proceedings abroad.
The former Anambra State governor described the reported legal effort to withhold records concerning the President’s past from a foreign court as embarrassing, arguing that the occupant of Nigeria’s highest political office should be prepared to confront questions surrounding matters of legitimate public interest.
“It is profoundly embarrassing that we have reached a point where a sitting President is asking a foreign court to withhold records concerning his past, particularly records relating to matters of legitimate public interest,” Obi said.

He questioned why records relating to the President’s foundational education, including his primary and secondary school history, should remain the subject of controversy or be addressed principally through legal proceedings.
According to Obi, Nigerians are entitled to “clear, credible, and verifiable explanations” on issues concerning public officials, particularly where educational records have previously been submitted or referenced.
The NDC candidate argued that the controversy goes beyond President Tinubu as an individual because the conduct of the Presidency carries implications for public confidence in the institutions of the Nigerian state.
He also warned that prolonged controversy over questions concerning the background of political leaders could send the wrong message to young Nigerians, stressing that the highest office in the land should exemplify integrity, transparency and accountability.
“The nation’s highest office should exemplify integrity, accountability, transparency, and ethical leadership,” Obi said.
He added, “Nigeria is greater than any one person, and the integrity of the Republic must always come before the interests of the individual.”

Obi’s intervention comes as political parties and presidential candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the credibility, integrity and records of political leaders expected to become increasingly prominent campaign issues.
The former Anambra governor maintained that questions concerning the integrity of the country’s highest office should be addressed through transparency and credible explanations rather than prolonged legal disputes.
His comments are likely to further sharpen the political contest between the opposition and the Tinubu administration, particularly as the 2027 presidential race enters a more intense phase.
