Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party has taken an early lead in the Osun State governorship election, winning 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas, while his closest challenger, All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Bola Oyebamiji, has won 11 LGAs.

The result places Adeleke in a commanding position as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) prepares to make the final declaration at the state collation centre in Osogbo.

Based on the results announced from the 30 local government areas, Adeleke secured 511,067 votes, while Oyebamiji polled 444,815 votes, giving the incumbent a margin of 66,252 votes.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Salaam, finished a distant third with 14,989 votes, according to the figures available at the time of filing the report.

The election was largely dominated by Adeleke’s Accord Party and the APC, with the two parties accounting for the overwhelming majority of votes cast across the state.

Adeleke recorded victories in several of the state’s major population centres, including Ede South, Ede North, Ife North, Ife Central, Ife East, Osogbo, Ilesa West, Odo Otin, Ifelodun, Iwo and Egbedore, among others.

Oyebamiji, however, secured victories in a number of strategically important LGAs, including Ilesa East, Boripe, Irepodun, Obokun, Irewole, Atakumosa West, Atakumosa East, Isokan, Olaoluwa, Ife South and Olorunda.

The APC candidate’s strongest showing came in Irewole Local Government Area, where he secured 29,972 votes against Adeleke’s 10,934.

He also won Ilesa East with 16,208 votes to Adeleke’s 12,280, Boripe with 19,963 against 12,448, and Olorunda with 24,671 against 23,514.

Adeleke, meanwhile, recorded some of his widest margins in Ede North, where he polled 35,427 votes against the APC’s 10,283; Ede South, where he secured 26,188 against 6,219; and Ife East, where he obtained 27,201 against 18,600.

In Osogbo, the state capital, Adeleke polled 36,480 votes, defeating Oyebamiji, who recorded 30,474 votes.

The governor also won Ife Central with 21,171 votes to the APC’s 15,913 and Iwo with 27,085 votes against 19,660.

The contest had attracted significant attention across the state, with 15 political parties fielding candidates. However, the election effectively became a two way contest between the incumbent Adeleke and Oyebamiji as the campaign progressed.

The final outcome is now subject to the formal declaration by the INEC Returning Officer, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Professor Joshua Ogunwole, following the conclusion of the collation process.
